Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume (also translated as Valkyrie Profile: The Accursed Ones) is the third Valkyrie Profile installment to date, and the first title to branch away from the common theme of the first two titles, and feature a mere mortal as the main character who takes up arms against the Valkyrie on duty, Lenneth. Additionally it will be the first tri-Ace title on DS, which will be able to utilize it's dual screen abilities.
As is often he case with tri-Ace titles the musical score is composed by Motoi Sakuraba. The title also offers a handful of excellent movie style scenes, and also some voice acting in battles, despite been a DS game. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume proves the DS is not without power while proving a unique RPG experience.
The lead character is Wilfred, a young man who intends to get vengeance against the Valkyrie whom took his fathers soul, Thyodor as one of her Einherjar. Wilfred was just 10 years of age at the time and the loss of his father lead the family into poverty, which ultimately claimed his sisters life. Wyl has much to dislike about the gods, and with some 'encouragement' from Hel he moves onto a quest to get ease his pain by defeating the Valkyrie.
The games uses Sprites and a overhead style view at most times, with a battle typical tactical RPG system - where fighting itself very much resembles Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. The unique aspect however is unlike most tactical RPG's is that you can attack in groups in a typical Valkyrie Profile fashion. Where timed button presses are the way to defeat your opponent. To change things even further you have been given a Destiny Plume as pact with Hel, which requires you to reap Sin against your enemies. You are encouraged to continue to attack your opponents even when they are defeated, Overkilling is recommended. But the Destiny Plume offers even more then that, unparalleled power, but at a price you will learn during the game...
In Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume there is a relatively new cast to the series, where Wyl will move throughout Midgard, a land at war while he builds his strength and resolve to take on the Valkyrie Lenneth. As always with Valkyrie Profile Series you will also witness appearances from both Freya & Odin during your journey depending on your actions.
On offer is a very unique storyline where you can ultimately control which path you take, will you take Hel's emissary's advice and continue to reap sin for the plume and use the Destiny Plume? Or will you stay as true as possible and resist the temptation to use the fated Plume?
